The match began with Barrow AFC manager, Phil Wilson, as referee due to the non-appearance of the match officials and within the 1st minute Cavs took a shock lead when an error by Kevin Brown let in Marc Ayres to calmly lob Ben Morsby in the Barrow goal. The strong Barrow side looked disjointed and hesitant in defence and were punished further when Andrew Oxley fired home after a neat passing move. Dave Staunton replaced Phil Wilson as referee but Barrow were making few inroads into the Cavs defence despite a lot possession. Cavs keeper Lee Wadsworth was forced into a fingertip save from Nick Rogan and Steve Lysons grazed the post for Cavs before Rogan pulled one back for Barrow with a 20-yard free kick on the stroke of half time.
Both sides made changes at half time but Cavs still looked the more dangerous side and were awarded a penalty when Cotterill tripped Redhead. Pat Staunton coolly beat Morsby from the spot to make it 3-1. Cavs could hardly believe their luck soon after when Steve Lysons scored from 25 yards and the dream became reality with goals 5 and 6. A sharp turn of pace saw Scott Redhead score with a crisp shot into the bottom right corner before Cotterill and Morsby got in each other’s way to present Pat Staunton with his second goal of the game. At the other end Wadsworth, with the help of Peter Staunton, denied Rushton a consolation goal but Gavin Knight pulled one back near to the end when he latched onto a Morsby kick to volley past replacement keeper Scott Linklater.
